Dilahirkan Bertha Matilde Honoré di Louisville, Kentucky, ayahnya ahli perniagaan Henry Hamilton Honoré. Bertha, dikenali dalam keluarga sebagai "Cissie," belajar di kampung halaman dan mencapai reputasi sebagai ahli muzik berkemahiran, ahli linguistik yang cekap, penulis yang cemerlang, ahli politik berkebolehan, dan pentadbir baik.
