Seruling dapat dimaiankan dengan beberapa sumber udara. Seruling kebiasaan ditiup dengan mulut, mahupun terdapat alat yang ditiup melalui hidung (misalnya, selengut, alat muzik orang [[Sarawak]]). Paip [organ]], yang dari segi akustik sama dengan seruling salur, ditiup dengan belo atau kipas.
