Serbs intended to preserve Bosnia and Herzegovina as a component part of the former state. They believed that the area of Central Podrinje (Srebrenica region) had a primary strategic importance for them. Without the area of Central Podrinje, which was predominantly Bosniak [[ethnic]] territory, there would be no territorial integrity within their new political entity of [[Republika Srpska]]. The Serbs did not want to accept the [[Bosniak]] [[enclave]] within their planned territories, because the territory would be split in two and it would be separated from Serbia proper and from areas in eastern Herzegovina which were primarily inhabited by Serb population.<ref>ICTY, Prosecutor vs. Krstic, Trial Chamber Judgement, para. 12</ref>
