Attakavadi or "dancing kavadi" is well known as Last Kavadi during Thaipusam Festival in Penang Malaysia. The main beam of the kavadi was cut from a tree which fell during a thunderstorm in 1926 in the Island Glades area. When workers arrived to cut down the tree and remove the branches and trunk, they notice the dark centre piece of the trunk. That was later carved to become the main beam of the attakavadi. He said the kavadi is now 87 years old and it has been carried by devotees every Thaipusam except in 1970 due to unforeseen problems.Only those with the right devotion, skill and strenght are able to carry the attakavadi. The attakavadi's original weight was around 80kg but as time passed the weight was reduced to 60kg for the convenience of the kavadi bearer. The attakavadi is accompanied by two sets of traditional musician and drummers while making its journey from the Maha Mariamman Temple in Queen Street.Around 20 kavadi bearers take turns to carry the kavadi along its journey through Chulia Street,Penang Road,Datuk Keramat Road, and Jalan Utama to the Nattukotai Thendayuthabani(Chettiar Temple Waterfall) in Waterfall.Adding that four bottle of rose water are embedded in the attakavadi as offering to Lord Muruga.
