Dari 1960 hingga 1976 hanya empat pasukan yang layak dari pusingan kelayakan ke kejohanan akhir. Walaupun persediaan awal tawaran dari Turki, Ireland-Wales-Scotland dan Azerbaijan-Georgia untuk menjadi tuan rumah [[UEFA Euro 2020|Euro 2020]] telah berlaku, namun ia telah diumumkan pada bulan Disember 2012 bahawa kejohanan itu akan diadakan di bandar-bandar di beberapa negara-negara Eropah.
