Aged 58, Azim was Chairman of Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN), Malaysia’s National Savings Bank. The Bank, which is a Government entity charged with inculcating the savings habit amongst Malaysians, has more than US$3.0 billion in assets and during his 10 years as Chairman of BSN, has seen a steady improvement in operating profits.

Growing from his work with BSN, Azim is also active in the work undertaken by the Brussels based World Savings Banks Institute (WSBI). In 2000, he was appointed President (Asia Pacific) for WSBI and in 2003, he was elevated to its Board of Directors. Azim was elected as Vice President and Treasurer of WSBI from September 2006 until April 2009.

A long association with the unit trusts/mutual funds and fund management industry culminated in Azim’s election as President of the Federation of Malaysian Unit Trust Managers, a post he held from 1998 to 2003. During this period, he was appointed Member of the Steering Committee of the International Investment Funds Association (IIFA), Montreal, Canada, a post he held until 2008. From 2007 to 2008, Azim was elected a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Audit Committee of IIFA.

Active in politics, Azim has served in numerous capacities at all levels of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the senior party in the coalition that has ruled Malaysia since Independence in 1957. In 2004, he was appointed the party’s Treasurer by Prime Minister and UMNO President, Abdullah Badawi. He was also designated Treasurer General of Barisan Nasional, or National Front, Malaysia’s multi-ethnic ruling coalition. Earlier, Azim was elected to UMNO’s Supreme Council in 2000.

In Malaysia, Azim has been repeatedly tapped by the Government for advice on a range of critical financial policy issues. He was a member of the National Economic Consultative Council II, where he served on the Islamic Banking and Finance Committee. He was also selected by the Securities Commission to be a member of its Capital Market Advisory Council. The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now Bursa Malaysia) asked him to be a member of its Index Committee and Deputy Chairman of its Board of Advisors for the Malaysian Central Depository.

Aside from his professional career, Azim has been invited to speak at numerous international fora on a range of subjects. Notable were speaking engagements at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Washington D.C., World Economic Forum, Davos, where he was one of the founder members of the New Asian Leaders Network, Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand. In addition, he has been sought out by reporters from sources as diverse as the BBC and the Asian Wall Street Journal, to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the New Straits Times, for his views on current, political and economic issues.

Azim is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, United Kingdom and holds an MA (Business Law) from London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. He is married with three children. His interests include reading, travelling and most types of sports, whilst his passion is the Arts. Arising from this, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery, Malaysia in March 2009, a post he held until 2010.

He was also recently appointed as Chairman of the National Sports Institute and subsequent to that, he will be Malaysia’s Chef-de-Mission to the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
