Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England, to Welshman Brinley "Bryn" Newton-John (1914–1992), seorang bekas pegawai pegawai pengintipan MI5[4] semasa Perang Dunia Kedua, dan Irene Helene (née Born) (1914–2003); Bryn terlibat terutamanya dalam projek Enigma Bletchley Park yang terlibat membongkar keberadaan Rudolf Hess serta memberkas pegawai Nazi tersebut,[5][6] beliau menjadi seorang guru besa mengetuai Cambridgeshire High School for Boys setelah perang tesebut tamat. Datuk sebelah ibunya, Max Born,[7][8][9][10] merupakan seorang ahli fizik dari Jerman yang melarikan diri ke England dari rejim Nazi yang bermaharajalela.
