Rosaly M. C. Lopes (lahir 8 Januari 1957 di Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)[2] ialah ahli geologi planet, ahli volkanologi, penulis banyak kertas saintifik dan beberapa buku, serta penyokong pendidikan. Kepentingan penyelidikan utamanya ialah dalam proses permukaan planet dan daratan dengan penekanan pada vulkanologi.[1][3][4][5]

Kehidupan dan kerjaya saintifik sunting

Di awal kehidupannya, Lopes tinggal berdekatan Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. Sedikit diilhamkan oleh Poppy Northcutt dari NASA,[2] beliau berpindah ke London, England pada tahun 1975 untuk mempelajari astronomi di Universiti London. Beliau lulus dengan kepujian dalam bidang astronomi pada tahun 1978. Semasa semester terakhirnya, beliau mengambil kursus sains planet[6] bersama John Guest – dan tiga minggu setelahnya, Gunung Etna meletus. Lopes memutuskan untuk mengubah bidang pengajiannya ke gunung berapi, di bumi dan di angkasa.[2][6][7]

Untuk pengajian kedoktorannya, beliau mengkhususkan diri dalam bidang geologi dan gunung berapi planet, menyelesaikan Ph.D.nya dalam Sains Planet pada tahun 1986 dengan tesis mengenai membandingkan proses gunung berapi di Bumi dan Marikh. Semasa Ph.D. beliau mengembara secara meluas ke gunung berapi aktif[6] dan menjadi ahli Pasukan Pengawasan Pelupusan Volkanik UK. Pengalaman pertama gunung berapi aktifnya ialah Gunung Etna di Sicily pada tahun 1979.[2]

Karya dan minat lain sunting

Lopes ialah seorang penyokong pendidikan, biodiversiti, dan jangkauan baik secara kebangsaan mahupun antarabangsa. Beliau telah menyampaikan ceramah am di beberapa negara di Eropah, Asia, dan Amerika. Beliaj juga merupakan salah seorang penganjur bersama PBB/Agensi Angkasa Eropah/The Planetary Society pada tahun 1992 dan 1993. Pada tahun 2005, beliau dianugerahikan Pingat Carl Sagan dari Bahagian Sains Planet Persatuan Astronomi Amerika,[8] sebagai penghargaan atas usahanya dalam pendidikan umum, khususnya di kalangan Hispanik dan wanita muda.[9] Karyanya meliputi berbagai perbincangan, wawancara, artikel, sebuah buku tentang vulkanisme planet, dan berupaya mengembangkan dan membimbing para saintis muda. Hobinya ialah selam skuba, dan mengunjungi, mendaki, serta mengumpul seni gunung berapi.
