Tom McCarthy
Thomas Joseph McCarthy atau lebih dikenali sebagai Tom McCarthy[1] (lahir 7 Jun 1966)[2] ialah seorang pengarah filem, penulis skrip, dan pelakon Amerika Syarikat yang telah muncul dalam beberapa filem, termasuk Meet the Parents dan Good Night, and Good Luck, dan siri televisyen seperti The Wire, Boston Public, Law & Order, dan persembahan Hallmark Hall of Fame Saint Maybe.

McCarthy telah menerima pujian kritis untuk kerja penulisan/arahannya untuk filem-filem bebas The Station Agent (2003), The Visitor (2007), Win Win (2011), dan Spotlight (2015), yang terakhir memenangi Anugerah Akademi untuk Filem Terbaik, memenangi McCarthy Anugerah Akademi untuk Skrip Asal Terbaik, dan dinamakan untuk Anugerah Akademi untuk Pengarah Terbaik.

Kehidupan dan kerjaya sunting
McCarthy dibesarkan di New Providence, New Jersey, salah satu daripada lima anak Carol dan Eugene F. "Gene" McCarthy.[3][4] Bapanya bekerja di dalam industri tekstik.[5] Beliau dibesarkan dalam kepercayaan Katolik, dalam sebuah keluarga berketurunan Ireland.[6] McCarthy adalah lulusan New Providence High School di New Providence, New Jersey; Kolej Boston, Kelas 1988 di mana beliau menjadi ahli kumpulan komedi improvisasi My Mother's Fleabag; dan Yale School of Drama,[7][8] di mana beliau belajar di bawah Earle R. Gister.
McCarthy menghabiskan beberapa tahun membuat komedi dan teater berdiri di Minneapolis dan Chicago sebelum melangkah ke televisyen dan filem.[9] Beliau berlakon di dalam Flags of Our Fathers sebagai James Bradley dan musim akhir The Wire sebagai wartawan yang dicabar secara moral bernama Scott Templeton. Filem kedua McCarthy ialah The Visitor, yang ditayangkan pada Festival Filem Antarabangsa Toronto 2007. Untuk The Visitor, McCarthy memenangi Anugerah Independent Spirit 2008 untuk Pengarah Terbaik.[12] McCarthy muncul dalam drama 2009 The Lovely Bones dan 2012.[13][14] Pada 2010, McCarthy dicalonkan untuk Anugerah Akademi untuk Skrip Asal Terbaik untuk filem animasi Up.
Beliau juga menulis dan mengarahkan Win Win 2011 berdasarkan pengalamannya sebagai ahli gusti di New Providence High School.[15]
Filem terkini McCarthy, sebuah filem drama bebas Spotlight, menerima sambutan meluas selepas dikeluarkan pada 2015. Filem ini menerima 6 pencalonan Anugerah Akademi, 3 pencalonan Anugerah Golden Globe, 2 pencalonan Anugerah Screen Actors Guild, dan 8 pencalonan Anugerah Filem Pilihan Pengkritik.
Pada Februari 2016, ia diumumkan bahawa McCarthy akan mengarahkan dua episod pertama 13 Reasons Why, dari Anonymous Content dan Paramount Television. Ia berdasarkan daripada buku paling laris 2007 YA New York Times oleh Jay Asher.[16]
