There are currently five language Wikiversities - English, French, German, Italian and Spanish - and new language Wikiversity projects in other languages are in development at the [http://beta.wikiversity.org "beta"] multilingual hub.

 

Wikiversity is in development as a center for the creation and use of free learning materials, and the provision of [[v:Portal:Learning Projects|learning activities]]. Its primary priorities and goals are to:

In order to move out of its "beta" phase, a goal for the Wikiversity community during the six month beta phase is the creation of policies governing research activities. Wikiversity may act as a repository of research carried out by the [[m:Wikimedia Research Network|Wikimedia Research Network]], or others who are involved in wiki-based, or other research. Wikiversity was originally started at [[Wikibooks:Wikiversity|Wikibooks]] in 2003. In 2005, a formal proposal<ref>Wikimedia Meta-Wiki: [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikiversity Original Wikiversity proposal] (not approved)</ref> to start Wikiversity as an independent project was voted on.<ref>Wikimedia Meta-Wiki: [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikiversity/Vote Wikiversity Vote]</ref> The Wikiversity project was discussed at the November 2005 Wikimedia Board meeting.<ref>Wikimedia Meta-Wiki: [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_agenda Board agenda for the Wikimedia Foundation]</ref> The Wikimedia Foundation [[m:Board of Trustees|Board of Trustees]] requested that some [[v:Wikiversity:Original proposal#Evaluation of the old proposal|changes]] be made before the project would start at its own website. The [[m:Wikiversity/Modified project proposal|Modified project proposal]] was [http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution_Wikiversity approved] by the Board. By the time it was approved, 17 language portals had been developed on Wikibooks.

 

Interestingly, Wikiversity embodies [[James Grier Miller]]'s concept (1982) of the University of the World.
