The long-standing and affable ties among the various ethnic groups of Sarawak have become an integral element in ensuring political stability in the State’s diverse communities.

Although there is no denying of internal hiccups and fall outs in the BN’s component parties, the ruffled feathers remain within the parties and are conscientiously smoothed out by the individuals and parties concerned without impinging on the strength and stability of the coalition.

During the 1991 State Elections, the BN won all 56 seats contested, in 1996 the coalition won 57 out of 62 and in 2001 it won all but one of the 62 seats.

For Parliamentary seats, Sarawak BN won all 28 seats contested in 1995 as well as in 1999. The General Election saw Sarawak BN winning 27 out the 28 seats.

The Sarawak State Elections 2006 will see contests in 71 state constituencies.

There are nine new state constituencies namely Opar and Kota Sentosa (Kuching Division), Lingga (Sri Aman), Balai Ringin (Serian), Bukit Saban (Betong), Daro, (Mukah) Bekenu and Pujut (Miri) and Batu Danau (Limbang).

1.Four constituencies have been renamed namely Serdeng which is now known as Semop; Matu Daro (Jemoreng); Limbang (Bukit Batu) and Lawas (Bukit Sari).

There are three newly created parliamentary seats namely Igan, Sibuti and Limbang.

Out of the 71 state seats, the Sarawak BN’s Supreme Council has decided on:

35 for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) – previously 30
19 for Sarawak United Peoples' party (SUPP) – previously 17
9 for Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) – previously 6; and
8 for Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) – previously 7.

All 71 seats are expected to be contested. Opposition parties namely the Sarawak National Party (SNAP), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) and the Kongres Dayak Malaysia (MDC) have indicated that they will contest in strategic constituencies.

The Sarawak State Elections have also often seen multi-cornered fights with independent candidates joining the tussle – even up to six contenders going after one seat. This trend is expected to continue this year.

Total number of voters in Sarawak according to the gazetted on March 16, 2006 is 892,537. (This is a 9.2% increase from 817,460 eligible voters in 1996).
