Syarikat itu bermula apabila ahli kimia makanan Inggeris Gustav Mellin membangunkan formula bayi pada tahun 1866.[2] Formula Mellin ialah versi ringkas yang telah dicipta baru-baru ini oleh ahli kimia Jerman Justus von Liebig.[3] Ia bukan suplemen pemakanan keseluruhan; serbuk itu dicairkan dengan susu lembu dan air dan dipanggil "pengubah suai susu".[2] Ia adalah "ekstrak gandum yang larut dan kering, barli malt dan kalium bikarbonat."[4] Formula itu diiklankan dengan slogan: "Makanan Mellin untuk Bayi dan Invalid: Satu-satunya pengganti yang sempurna untuk Susu Ibu".[5]

Pada tahun 1902, Syarikat Makanan Mellin menaja pembinaan kapal udara pertama United Kingdom oleh Stanley Spencer. Kapal udara yang telah siap itu memuatkan iklan Mellin's Food pada sampulnya. Pada 22 September 1902, Spencer menerbangkan "Kapal Udara Mellin" (secara rasmi dinamakan "Kapal Udara No 1") merentasi London dari Crystal Palace ke Harrow.[6]
