Caution note sunting

Using this template automatically includes category:Wikipedia navigation templates into the template so tagged, and so the call to this template should be nested in a <noinclude>...<noinclude> Block so it doesn't carry over beyond the tagged template. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:911hijack&action=edit for example.

Purpose sunting

Purpose: Cross-link and normalize all en.wikipedia templates also used of the same name on the commons. These are not used the same way, nor necessarily have the same form as those here due to the different missions of the sister projects and the differing 'spaces' they operate within.

Default linked page is to page of same name (only, see below), and specified argument is automatically prefixed by 'Commons:Template:' to create and correct inter-wiki link. This allows both project template versions to be seen and compared easily.

  • This applies to the SECOND argument given if for some reason the template is applied to link a slightly different name.
  • The first argument following the first pipe character is assumed to be the template name alone for pipetrick alphabetical sorting in the (automatic) category:Wikipedia navigation templates. This is because generally, the default {PAGENAME} should be the same on both sister projects.

     i.e. the logic is:
               [[Commons:Template:{{{2|{{PAGENAME}}}}}]] and

               [[Category:Wikipedia navigation templates|{{{1|{{PAGENAME}}}}}]]

NOTE: This template may be included in See Also or Usage sections (so long as it's nested in template 'noinclude' blocks).

NOTE: This template means the commons uses a template of the same name, which is normally similar in function as ours given the applied page spaces are usually different (Wikimedia Commons 'Main Space' is more category spaces than article space where such are applied.) special purpose templates are at least derivative of those here (e.g. 'century box' is derived but quite different, many linking our articles need pipetricks and page links preceded by 'W:', et-cetera).

However, the commons media and organizational needs (Categories) sometimes means the templates are very different. (But it's nice to check if they need the same changes!)

The Converse, on the commons: Template:WikiPtmp tags templates linking to WikiP template space.
