Klorofil
Klorofil atau zat hijau merupakan pigmen fotosintesis yang boleh dijumpai dalam kebanyakan tumbuhan, alga dan sianobakteria. Namanya berasal daripada bahasa Greek lama: χλωρός, chloros = hijau dan φύλλον, phyllon = daun. Klorofil berfungsi untuk menukarkan tenaga cahaya matahari kepada makanan pada tumbuhan dalam proses yang dikenali sebagai fotosintesis. Klorofil yang berbentuk merupakan bintil berpigment hijau dikenali sebagai kloroplas.
Klorofil menyerap cahaya yang paling baik pada spektrum elektromagnet bahagian biru, diikuti oleh bahagian merah.[1] Sebaliknya, ia ialah penyerap yang lemah pada bahagian hijau dan hampir hijau spektrum, yang ia pantulkan, lalu menghasilkan tisu mengandungi klorofil berwarna hijau. Molekul klorofil secara khusus teratur pada dan sekitar fotosistem yang terbenam dalam membran tilakoid pada kloroplas. Dua jenis klorofil wujud dalam fotosistem tumbuhan hijau, iaitu klorofil a dan b.[2]
Klorofil pertama kali diasingkan dan dinamakan oleh Joseph Bienaimé Caventou dan Pierre Joseph Pelletier pada tahun 1817.[3]
