Ia adalah salah satu daripada dua pengganti kepada iPhone 5, bersama dengan iPhone 5s. Apple mengadakan acara secara rasmi bagi memperkenalkan iPhone 5C dan 5S pada 12 September 2013, dan ia telah dipasarkan pada 20 September 2013, serta merta menghentikan jualan iPhone 5, walaupun ia merupakan iPhone pertama yang dikeluarkan kepada pembekal GSM seperti T-Mobile sejak iPhone 4.
