Christoph R. Mueller is a German businessman and chief executive officer of Malaysia Airlines. Known as "the Terminator" for his German accent and his tendency to layoff workers, Mueller has been credited with the financial recovery of Irish airline Aer Lingus.[1][2]

Career

In 1988, Mueller graduated from the University of Cologne with a Diplom Kaufmann in accounting and finished an Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1999.[3]

In 1989, Mueller took up an analyst role at German airline Lufthansa. After rising through the ranks, he left the company to join Belgian airline Sabena in 1999 as CEO. The airline faced competition from rival Swissair and Mueller presided over a number of job cuts in order to stay competitive. Following the September 11 attacks and the subsequent downturn in the airline industry, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2001. He later took up senior roles at logistics company DHL Express and the travel group TUI.[4]

In 2009, Mueller was appointed CEO of Irish airline Aer Lingus where he repositioned the loss making company as a service airline to compete with low budget alternatives, such as Ryanair.[5] During his time in Ireland, he was also named on the managing board of Tourism Ireland and as chairman of An Post.[6] He left his Irish roles in 2015 to take up the CEO position at Malaysia Airlines, a company struggling after two recent air accidents, MH370 and MH17, and competition from low budget airline Air Asia.[7][8] At the start of his tenure, he declared that the airline was "technically bankrupt" and announced job losses of around 6,000 - roughly a third of the workforce.[9]
