Istilah "garam kosher" berasal daripada penggunaannya dalam membuat daging menjadi kosher dengan mengeluarkan darah permukaan, bukannya dibuat mengikut garis panduan [[Kasyrut|makanan kosher]] seperti yang tertulis dalam [[Taurat (Tanakh)|Taurat]], kerana hampir semua garam kosher dan halal, termasuk garam meja biasa.
