Dalam kerajaan, beliau pernah menjadi Ketua Pengarah, Arkib Negara dan Perpustakaan Malaysia ; Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri Selangor ; Ketua Setiausaha, Kementerian Kerajaan Tempatan dan Wilayah Persekutuan; Ketua Setiausaha, Kementerian Kesihatan ; Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha, Jabatan Perdana Menteri ; Ketua Setiausaha, Kementerian Pertanian dan terakhir pada 1987 sebagai Ketua Pengarah, Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) sebelum bersara.


Keluarga sunting

Alwi Jantan lahir pada 16 April 1935 di Dungun, Terengganu. Isterinya Puan Sri Datin Sharifah Aminah binti Syed Bahaldin dan mereka dikurniakan dua anak iaitu Intan Aminah. Kini mereka menetapa di Persiaran Duta,50490 [[Kuala Lumpur].


Pendidikan sunting

Alwi Jantan bersekolah di Kolej Melayu Kuala Kangsar dan mendapat B.A. (Hons) dan Universiti Malaya, Singapura. Pada 1979 beliau mendapat Diploma in Paleography, Archive and Diplomacy, Rome, Itali. Beliau pernah mengikuti kursus Advanced Management Programme,Harvard Business School.
