Dwayne Douglas Johnson lahir pada 2 Mei 1972[3] di Hayward negeri California.[4] Beliau darah kacukan kulit hitam dan Samoa hasil perkahwinan Ata Maivia, anak pegusti Peter Maivia dari Samoa Amerika[5][6] dan Rocky Johnson,[7][8] seorang pegusti dari Nova Scotia.[9] Dwayne dibesarkan pada usia kecilnya di New Zealand bersama keluarga sebelah ibunya[10] bersekolah dan terlibat bermain ragbi[11] sebelum berpindah ke Amerika Syarikat tidak lama kemudian.[10] Beliau belajar di Montclaire Elementary School Charlotte, Carolina Utara sebelum berpindah ke Hamden, Connecticut bersekolah di Shepherd Glen Elementary School dan Hamden Middle School.[12][13]

Beliau banyak berpindah randah sepanjang zaman sekolah tingginya baik di President William McKinley High School Honolulu, Hawaii, Glencliff High School dan McGavock High School di Nashville, Tennessee serta Freedom High School di Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.[14] Pada waktu ini jugalah beliau giat bersukan dalam peringkat sekolah termasuk bola sepak Amerika serta gusti cara lama.

Pada 2 September 2020, selama wabak COVID-19, Johnson mengumumkan Instagram bahwa dia, isterinya, dan dua anak perempuan mereka semuanya diuji positif virus tersebut, yang terjangkit dari kawasan keluarga, tetapi mereka telah pulih sepenuhnya.[15]
