Pertempuran Somme

Pertempuran Somme (Perancis: Bataille de la Somme, Jerman: Schlacht an der Somme), juga dikenali sebagai Serangan Somme, merupakan pertempuran semasa Perang Dunia Pertama antara tentera empayar British dan Perancis menentang empayar Jerman. Ia berlangsung antara 1 Julai dan 18 November 1916 pada kedua belah tebing Sungai Somme di Perancis. Pertempuran ini merupakan salah satu yang terbesar semasa Perang Dunia Pertama, di mana lebih dari 1,000,000 orang tercedera atau terkorban, menjadikannya satu dari pertempuran paling berdarah dalam sejarah kemanusiaan. Tekad Perancis-British bagi serangan di Somme telah dibuat semasa perbincangan Berikat di Chantilly, Oise pada Disember 1915. Pihak Berikat bersetuju dengan strategi serangan gabungan terhadap Kuasa Pusat pada tahun 1916, oleh tentera Perancis, Russia, British dan Itali, dengan serangan Somme sebagai sumbangan Perancis-British. Bahagian utama serangan akan dibuat oleh Tentera Perancis, disokong di sisi utara oleh Tentera Keempat dari Pasukan Expeditionari British ("British Expeditionary Force-BEF").

Ketika Tentera Jerman memulakan Pertempuran Verdun di Meuse pada Februari 1916, banyak divisen Perancis yang bertujuan bagi Somme dilencongkan dan serangan sokongan oleh pihak British kini menjadi usaha utama. Jeneral Sir Douglas Haig, komander BEF dan Jeneral Henry Rawlinson, 1st Baron Rawlinson komander Tentera Keempat, telah dikritik sejak itu, kerana bilangan korban semasa pertempuran dan kerana gagal mencapai matlamat jajahan mereka. Pada 1 Ogos 1916 Winston Churchill mengkritik kelakuan Tentera British samasa serangan pada Kabinet British, mendakwa bahawa sungguhpun pertempuran tersebut telah memaksa Jerman menghentikan serangan mereka di Verdun, attrition mejejaskan tentera British lebih berbanding tentera Jerman.
